When your pond or lake has excess nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen) eutrophication is accelerated. Eutrophication is the process where nutrients are deposited in the sediments (nutrient loading). When water depth changes, temperature changes or there is an excess build up of nutrients multiple adverse and unwanted water quality events occur: algal blooms, harmful algal blooms, murkiness, low oxygen levels related to overall biological oxygen demand and diminished fish growth.
